Yes, you do need a website

A lot of business owners, especially in the early days, ask themselves: “Do I actually need a website?” Here is my take, from the perspective I have when I am the one looking for a supplier, product or service.

When I am after something, I often hear about or come across the name of a company that supposedly provides it. My next step is always the same: I search for that company’s website, so I can confirm they really offer what I need and find their contact details. If I cannot find a website, my mind immediately jumps to one of three conclusions:

  1. The company is no longer in business.
  2. The company does not actually provide what I am looking for.
  3. Contacting them and doing business with them is going to be a mission.

Are those assumptions always fair? No. There are plenty of excellent, well-run companies out there without a website. But here is what is always true: those assumptions get made anyway. When I cannot find an up-to-date website with contact details, I picture myself dialling a number from an old directory listing that is no longer in service, or driving out to an address I found in the Yellow Pages and hoping the business is still there and open when I arrive. Worse, I might waste the trip only to discover they do not sell the thing I came for.

All of that doubt and friction disappears the moment a company has a current website with valid, easy-to-find contact details, an address and business hours. Confusion about exactly what you sell is solved the same way, by a well-structured site that lays out your products and services in a format people can take in at a glance.

A website is also a trust signal

A website is not only a practical tool for telling people who you are and what you do. It is also one of the strongest trust signals you have. The world is digital-first now, and a company with no website, or with a broken, outdated one, gets mentally filed next to the fly-by-night operators. A company that has clearly invested in its online presence, with a well-designed and current website, sends the opposite signal: that it is a real business, run by real people, at a real address, that is not going to vanish with your money or halfway through a project.

So, do you need a website?

Yes. A professionally designed website is a must-have investment for any company or brand that wants to be taken seriously.
