What does a website cost in South Africa?

The honest answer is "it depends", but that is useless when you are trying to budget. So here are real ranges for South Africa in 2026, what moves the number, and where the hidden costs hide.

What a website costs, by route

  • DIY website builder: roughly R100 to R600 a month (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify), plus your time. You build it, you maintain it.
  • Freelancer with a template: around R3 000 to R12 000 once-off for a small site. Quality varies widely, so check their past work and who supports it afterwards.
  • Agency or studio, custom build: from around R8 000 for a focused small-business site, into the tens of thousands for larger or eCommerce builds. You are paying for custom design, performance, and a team that is still there in a year.

For reference, our own custom websites start from around R2 800 plus VAT for a simple one, and most small-business sites land between R5 000 and R30 000 depending on scope.

What actually drives the price

Two "websites" can differ in cost by ten times. The difference is almost always one of these:

  • Number of pages and amount of content. A one-pager is quick. A fifteen-page site with service pages and a blog is not.
  • Custom design versus a template. Designing from your brand takes longer than dropping content into a theme, and it shows.
  • eCommerce. Selling online adds products, payments, delivery, stock and tax. It is a different animal to a brochure site.
  • Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, payment gateways, WhatsApp, custom APIs. Each one adds work.
  • Copywriting and photography. If you need words and images produced, that is real work and real cost, whoever does it.

The costs people forget

The build is a once-off. Running the site is not. Budget for a domain (around R100 to R200 a year), hosting (from roughly R50 to a few hundred Rand a month), and maintenance or a care plan if you want someone keeping it updated and secure. If you are going to advertise, Google Ads or Meta spend is separate again, and it is usually the biggest number of them all.

Why the cheapest option often costs more

A R1 500 site built badly is not a bargain. If it loads slowly, does not show up on Google, breaks on a phone, or cannot be changed without the original developer, you pay for it in lost enquiries and then pay again to have it rebuilt. Price is what you pay. The real question is what the site brings back.

Working out your number

Start from what the site is for and how much of your business depends on it, then match the route to that. If you only need a simple presence, do not overspend. If the website is how you win work, it is not the place to cut corners. Not sure where you sit? Here is how to start, or send us your scope and we will give you an honest quote, with no pressure.
