Website design in South Africa: what 14 years of building sites has taught us

Need someone to handle your website design project - a new business site, a startup launch, an event microsite, or a full e-commerce build? You're in the right place.

At Website Creations we've spent the last 14 years designing and building websites that look good and actually work. We're a full-service web design agency based in Benoni, Gauteng, working with businesses and individuals across South Africa. From first wireframe through to hosting, maintenance, and post-launch support, our website design services cover everything you need to get online and stay online.

What we mean by "website design"

Website design isn't just how a site looks. It's how it loads, how it ranks, how easy it is for someone on a phone in Pretoria to find what they need and check out. A pretty site that takes eight seconds to load on 4G is a broken site. We design for the conditions South African users actually browse in.

Our work typically includes:

  • Custom WordPress and WooCommerce builds
  • E-commerce stores with local payment gateway integration (PayFast, Yoco, PayGate)
  • Brochure sites for service businesses
  • Landing pages built to convert paid traffic from Google Ads or Meta
  • Managed hosting, security hardening, and ongoing maintenance

5 reasons Website Creations is the right web design agency for South African businesses

1. Honest pricing for the South African market

We understand the economic landscape here. Most of our clients are SMEs, founders, and owner-operators - not enterprises with unlimited budgets. We've priced our website design services so they're accessible without dropping to the kind of margins where corners get cut. You get a premium build at a price that makes sense for the local market.

2. Turnkey - design, build, host, maintain

We're a one-stop shop. Discovery, design, development, copy support, hosting setup, DNS, SSL, security, post-launch support - all under one roof. No handing you off to "a hosting partner" after launch. No "you'll need to find a developer for that custom feature." Extensive WooCommerce experience means we can build the stores other agencies subcontract out, including custom plugins for specific feature and functionality requirements.

3. Customer service that doesn't end at launch

A lot of agencies disappear the day after handover. We don't. Every site we build comes with post-launch support to make sure you actually get value out of what we built. Need a new section added? Product catalogue updated? Plugin acting up? You're talking to the same team that built the site, so nobody is learning it from scratch on your time.

4. Built for performance and search

A website that ranks is a website that's been built properly underneath. We pay attention to page speed, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, clean markup, and the technical SEO foundations Google actually rewards. Every site ships with proper schema, optimised images, a sensible URL structure, and a sitemap submitted to Search Console. Your web designer shouldn't be guessing at this - we build it in from day one.

5. Marketing-aware design (because we run Google Ads too)

Website Creations is also a Google Ads agency. That means when we design a site, we're thinking about what happens after launch - how visitors find it, what makes them convert, where they drop off. The result is websites built to work with paid traffic, not just sit there looking nice. Every site we manage also gets access to AdSight, our free Google Ads reporting dashboard, so you can see what's actually driving leads.

Our website design process

The short version of how a project runs with us:

  1. Discovery — A short call to understand the business, the audience, and what success looks like.
  2. Design — Wireframes, then visual design. You see it before we build it.
  3. Build — Custom WordPress development. No bloated themes stuffed with features you'll never use.
  4. Content and SEO setup — Page structure, metadata, schema, analytics, Search Console.
  5. Launch — DNS cutover, SSL, redirects, post-launch monitoring.
  6. Support — Ongoing maintenance, backups, security hardening, content updates.

Who we work with

Mostly South African SMEs and owner-operated businesses - retailers, service businesses, professional practices, startups, and event organisers. We've built and maintained shops doing real e-commerce volume, and we've shipped landing pages for one-off events that needed to look sharp for six weeks and then come down.

If you're based in Benoni, Boksburg, Kempton Park, Johannesburg, Pretoria - or anywhere else in South Africa - and need a serious website design partner, get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

How much does website design cost in South Africa?

It depends on scope. A simple brochure site is very different from a custom WooCommerce build with hundreds of products. We quote properly after a discovery call - no surprise add-ons, no padded line items.

Do you only build WordPress sites?

WordPress and WooCommerce are our focus because they give clients ownership and flexibility long after launch. For specific use cases we'll recommend something else if it genuinely fits better.

Do you do website redesigns?

Yes. Often the first step is auditing the existing site to work out what's worth keeping and what should be rebuilt from scratch.

Do you offer website hosting?

Yes. Managed WordPress hosting, backups, SSL, and security monitoring are part of our turnkey offering.

Do you work with clients outside of Gauteng?

Yes. We're based in Benoni but we work with clients across South Africa — Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and everywhere in between. Almost everything we do can be handled remotely.
